As a busy Estate Manager a good Facilities Manager can be your best asset, so what do they do and why do you need one?
What is a facilities manager?
Facilities Managers cover a wide field with a diverse range of responsibilities, depending on the size of the home and the needs of the homeowner. Facilities Managers are involved in both strategic planning and day-to-day operations, particularly in relation to the homes systems and grounds
Responsibilities for Facilities Managers in a private home often include vendor management, building and grounds maintenance, housekeeping, security & safety audio visual, A/C heat, kitchen equipment and home management systems such as Creston or Vantage.
In smaller homes, duties may include more practical and hands-on tasks. They could be described as a superstar houseman.
Many facility management professionals are true jack of all trades,
Why do I need one?
Have you ever opened the gates to let in a service truck and watched the technician pick up his cell phone as he is driving down the driveway telling his wife “honey you can book that trip to Hawaii I think today is going to be a good day”?
Well a Facilities Manager will eliminate 99% of emergency service calls with a proper preventive maintenance schedule, and as for that emergency call, they will make sure the home owner is receiving quality service and value.
Often an Estate Manager has about 101 things to do at any given time. The Facilities Manager can be the point of contact for the housekeepers/housemen gardeners, pool person and vendors. They can be tasked with all the daily mundane duties allowing you to focus on the needs of the homeowners.
Facilities Manager can write the standard operating manual for all the equipment in a home, detailed cleaning and preventive maintenance schedules as well as the emergency response and evacuation plan.
The next time you are considering hiring a houseman take the position up a notch or two and hire a Facilities Manager.
