Estate Managers, also called Majordomos or Director of Properties, manage the estates of wealthy families or individuals. Estate Management positions are some of the most highly sought after positions for Household Managers in the industry. The title Estate Manager carries greater responsibilities than other household roles, such as managing possible 3-4 properties at the same time from one location. There is a difference being an Estate Manager over a Household Manager…ie more responsibility, travel to different properties with your principal, managing numerous staff, and selecting the right vendors to care for them.
It’s an awesome position to be in but you are being pulled in 100 directions with scheduling, purchasing, running errands to say the least. I have developed ways to simplify my position using technology to your advantage; develop reoccurring events on your smart phone or outlook, develop checklists, spread sheets for budgets, and most important of all is always carry a notebook & pen for noting anything that your Principal wants done. Have popup reminders or sticky notes because the human brain cannot remember all that you are asked to do.
Not everyone is ready for the massive responsibility of managing multiple properties. With proper training through a household management school and at least 3-5 years of experience though, you will be ready for this position. But do keep in mind that this job requires attention to detail at all times, patience, and a great personality.
